What to Expect From Your Contractors During a Bathroom Remodeling Project

The short answer to this question is that the homeowner can expect a mess. There will be plaster dust everywhere, exposed wires, exposed plumbing, tarps all over the floors and odd smells. There will the sounds of drilling and sawing and hammering and strange burly men tramping in and out of the house. The more extensive the remodeling, the more of a mess is going to happen. The homeowner can expect the greatest level of chaos if the plumbers rearrange the plumbing system, which will almost certainly necessitate the tearing out of walls and floors. Indeed, the pipes in the basement or the crawl space beneath the bathroom will have to be updated in this case. The homeowner and their family might want to move into other accommodations while their plumbing is being worked on, as it will not be functional for what’s hoped is a short time. They also can expect to pay a lot of money for all this.

The good news is that the homeowner and the contractors and the subcontractors that the contractor has hired on know this, because they have drawn up, understood and signed a meticulous contract. This contract not only has the cost of the project in writing, but has delineated what the responsibilities of the contractor and the homeowner are in the event of any changes, and there will be some. Unforeseen changes are also things a homeowner should expect during a remodel!

The contract has a start date for the job and an end a date for the job, more or less. The homeowner should also know what time in the morning to expect the workers and what time in the evening to expect them to leave. They should also know the order in which aspects of the job are done. For example, they should expect that whatever needs to be done behind the wall of the shower will be done before the wall is laid with new, expensive tile and grout.

The homeowner has made sure that all of the people who are going to work on the bathroom are insured, bonded and have workman’s compensation and that they, the homeowner, are protected against liens in case something goes awry.

The homeowner should also expect that the contractor will professionally and efficiently monitor and guide the subcontractors that have been hired for the remodel. These will include the plumbers, the people who lay the new tiles and the people who put the radiant heating under the floors. It will also include the electricians who install the new lighting and the subcontractors who install the new whirlpool tub, the toilet, the faucet, the sink and the shower room with its state of the art jet sprays and showerheads.

The homeowner should also expect that the contractor will keep them abreast of what is progressing and what isn’t progressing. This will just about eliminate costly surprises.

At the end of the day and especially at the end of the job, the homeowner should expect that the workers will clean up after themselves, thoroughly. This means they will leave nothing behind them but the homeowner’s brand new, gleaming bathroom. This stipulation, by the way, should also be in the contract.
